Saturnia pyri

Saturnia pyri , the Giant Peacock Moth, is the largest moth in Europe. Its appearance is immediately striking. Its brown and ash-grey wings bear a remarkable eyespot, reminiscent of the iris of an eye. These eyespots serve as a decoy to distract predators. The dark base highlights the texture of the wing velvet, the slightly wavy cream border, and the density of the thorax, whose dense hairs are typical of Saturniidae moths.

It is sold with its airtight glass-fronted display case, black frame on a black background. Each specimen is identified (Latin name and origin) on a calligraphed label.
