The orthoceran, a distant cousin of the nautilus, is an extinct species of cephalopod mollusc which lived during the Paleozoic between -470 and -252 million years ago. Its name comes from the Greek Orthoceras which means "straight horn" and describes the characteristic shape of its shell.
Able to measure from a few centimeters to more than eleven meters, the largest specimens of this family were among the main predators of their era!
